Get at Least Three Bids After you’ve done your research and narrowed down your field to a few trustworthy contractors, get competitive bids in writing from each of them for the job, and make sure they all use the same specifications. It’s tempting to automatically accept the lowest bid, but you’d be better served to discuss the differences in cost with the contractors you’ve chosen. You want to make sure the contractor won’t be cutting any corners with material, labor or clean-up. For example California Energy thermally seals and insulates each window with expanding foam. Most of our competitors don't spend the time or money with any type of sealants.
Understand Your Contract Pay close attention to the contract you sign before the job begins. This will protect both you and the contractor. Make sure the contract includes not only financial terms, but also explains exactly what will be done, as well as what won’t be done. If you and the contractor both understand each other’s expectations, you’ll both be happier with the project. Take a look at these examples: Bad: Install windows. Better: Install 12 vinyl windows. Best: Per plan, install 10 white Double Hung vinyl windows with Prairie Grids, and 2 white Bay vinyl windows (no grids) manufactured by (window manufacturer)
