3 Useful Tips to Help You Save Money on Your Energy Bills

California Energy Consultant Service is the top window replacement contractor and energy performance expert in our local area. We specialize in helping homeowners greatly improve their home’s energy efficiency. Our Home Performance Energy Assessment will help you determine where your home is losing energy and money, allowing us to solve this problem. Today, we will share some tips to help you conserve energy in your home:

  • Switch Off Appliances Not in Use – Older appliances are inefficient, which can lead to standby power losses. Generally speaking, it’s a good idea to unplug any electronics that you are not using at the moment. However, it can be inconvenient to do this to multiple items. We suggest plugging appliances to a power strip, which will allow you to shut off an entire cluster of items and prevent them from consuming energy even when you’ve turned them off.

  • Adjust Your Appliance Settings – As a home performance expert, we suggest setting your refrigerator to 36 to 28 degrees and the freezer to 0 to -5 because any temperature lower than that is just wasting energy. Food will not last any longer if you keep them at a lower temperature and some items like lettuce can get damaged if the temperature is too cold. If you use a dehumidifier, we suggest finding the humidity level you are comfortable with and setting it to that level. This prevents the device from running continuously and wasting money.

  • Reduce Air Leakage – One of the most effective things you can do to improve your home’s energy efficiency is to plug the many places where air can get in or out your home. We recommend increasing the amount of insulation in your home and asking a professional like us to check your windows for drafts. You can then seal these air leaks, or if necessary, get new replacement windows that are weathertight.

Aside from following these tips, it’s important for you to schedule a Home Energy Checkup with us. Our energy assessment service can greatly improve your home’s energy efficiency, make your interior feel more comfortable, and reduce your utility bills. California Energy Consultant Service has decades of experience and we are proud to be one of the few SMUD-preferred Energy Assessment providers.
