Do You Need a Window Sill Molding?

One of our customers a while back contacted us about replacing all the windows of their 1960s home. We removed almost 14 windows. In an effort to reduce costs, we originally saved the window sill moldings – the piece of wood that sit atop the window sill. But as we were re-installing the windows, the homeowner realized they liked the look of their windows without the sill there and asked us if a sill molding was really necessary.

The answer is no. While you do need a window sill itself (defined as a horizontal structure at the base of the window), you do not necessarily need to install a molding (also spelled moulding, referring to a piece of wood or other material that is placed on top of the sill).

Why Would You Want a Molding?

Window sill moldings do have benefits, so it’s important not to overlook the idea of a molding altogether. It can offer several purposes and benefits that may help to enhance your window in the short and long term. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Protection

Window sill moulding helps protect the edges of the window sill from damage. By covering the corners and edges, it reduces wear and tear caused by everyday use and minimizes the risk of chipping or cracking.

  • Sealing

Molding can improve the seal around the window sill, helping to reduce drafts and enhance the overall insulation of the window. This contributes to better energy efficiency and comfort within the home.

  • Decorative Appeal

Window sill moulding adds a decorative element to your windows, giving them a finished and polished look. It can be customized in various styles, from simple and clean lines to more intricate and ornate designs, allowing you to match the moulding to your interior decor.

  • Architectural Interest

In addition to its decorative appeal, window sill molding can enhance the architectural character of a room. It can complement other trim elements, such as baseboards and crown molding, creating a cohesive and harmonious design throughout the space.

Why Would You NOT Want a Window Sill Molding?

While many people like these benefits, many others actually prefer the look of a window sill that does not have molding. Without the molding, the sill may look more uninform all the way around, which is popular in modern and midcentury modern homes. Some people find that sills cheapen the look of the windows as well, especially if they chose something unique like black window frames that they want to highlight visually. Since most sill moldings protrude off the wall, those that want that feeling of a crisp and clean wall may find it less desirable.

No Wrong Choices

Typically, we install window frame moldings back at the owner’s request, and most of the time that is the preferred choice. But, as long as you’re getting full frame windows (also known as new construction) rather than retrofit windows, the choice is largely up to you. There is no wrong option, only an option that’s wrong for the final look you’re hoping to achieve.
