Maintenance Tips for Your LP® SmartSide® Siding

Well-maintained siding is essential to keep your home performance and energy efficiency in optimal condition. Siding failure can cause air leakage, insulation loss and an overall drop in your efficiency. While LP® SmartSide® siding products are designed to withstand enormous amounts of abuse from regular wear and tear and inclement weather, they still benefit from a regular maintenance and cleaning program.

Let our professionals at California Energy Consultant Service give you a few of our best tips on how to properly maintain your LP siding boards and keep your home shipshape under any season.

Cleaning

You can easily wipe up dirt, dust and grime build-up on your LP siding with a soft cloth and a mild detergent. Make sure to get under corners and joints like the frames and trims surrounding your window replacement and doors. It’s tempting to use a pressure washer to blast away some of the tougher spots, but this is a bad idea. Pressure washing your siding may corrode the weatherproof coating and damage the composite material underneath. It’s also important to avoid using harsh chemicals and abrasives as these can chip and flake the paint layer.

Maintenance

Have a professional inspect your siding at least once a year. This can prolong its life span and detect early signs of problems. Routine maintenance should include repainting. Remember to keep a record of the original mix of paint you first used to make matching colors easier in future repainting sessions. Touch up small worn out areas with a gentle brush. Clear away mold and mildew with a solution of three parts water and one part white vinegar. You can prevent further growth by making sure that your siding is well protected from sources of moisture.
