What Makes a Window Energy-Efficient?

Windows play a lot of important roles in your home. Windows affect curb appeal and value, bring in natural light and ventilation and contribute to energy efficiency. We recommend keeping these in mind when choosing replacement windows.

While factors like beauty and value can easily be determined, it can be confusing to figure out what makes a window energy-efficient. California Energy Consultant Service, the residential window replacement expert, explains more:

The Glass

Window glass affects how much heat is absorbed into your home. Its energy efficiency is measured by different factors, but we recommend focusing on the U-value and the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC). The U-value rates the amount of heat that escapes the room. It is usually expressed as a number between 0.20 and 1.20. If you want to improve your home’s comfort this winter, we recommend looking for a window with a low U-value.

SHGC, on the other hand, gauges the amount of heat that enters the room. Its value is determined by a number between 0 and 1. Windows with low SHGC are better at keeping your interior cool.

 The Frame

The frame affects your window’s resistance to heat conduction and air leakage. A more secure and durable frame results in a more energy-efficient window. Not all materials, however, can provide the same level of efficiency. Vinyl, for instance, features insulated cavities that can boost your home’s comfort. Meanwhile, for higher heat transfer resistance, we recommend fiberglass frames.

Our wood windows are naturally efficient and possess high insulation properties, helping regulate your interior temperature.

The Installation

The quality of installation also has a significant effect on a window’s energy efficiency. Even if you choose the most energy-efficient glass and framing materials, you won’t experience their benefits if the window is poorly installed. At California Energy Consultant Service, our installation team goes through rigorous training to ensure every member is constantly updated on the latest window installation techniques and practices. This allows us to provide you with flawless window replacements every time.
