Case Study: Fire-Resistant James Hardie Siding Transformation in Grass Valley, CA

James Hardie Siding

Project Overview

California Energy Consultant Service recently completed a James Hardie siding installation for Jeff and Nanci W. at their home in Grass Valley, CA. Guided by their sales representative, Guy White, the homeowners selected durable, low-maintenance James Hardie siding to refresh and protect their property. The project began on 12/09/24 and wrapped up on 01/08/25, spanning 32 days from start to finish. Installation was led by crew leader Tony Korchuck, whose team delivered a smooth, professional experience.

Challenges and Design Considerations

This was not a typical re-roof. As Sales Rep Mike C. explained, “The building’s eave line was nearly 40 feet high, and everything had to be done from a boom lift. The original gutter design had failed over a century of use, so we completely re-engineered it to match the home’s architectural style and improve drainage.”

Additional challenges included:

  • Structural Repairs: Dry rot at the eaves and fascia required reframing and replacement.

  • Historical Preservation: The home’s 44 redwood corbels—each uniquely curved—had to be preserved or rebuilt.

  • Height and Safety: No ladders could reach the eave line, requiring two boom lifts and strict safety coordination.

  • Material Transition: The roof decking required solid sheathing installation over original skip sheeting, pre-stained to maintain a vintage interior appearance.

Homeowner’s Goals

  • Replace deteriorating wood siding with a non-combustible, fire-resistant material

  • Maintain the classic board-and-batten look

  • Add design detail to the gables for architectural character

  • Upgrade select windows for energy efficiency without committing to a full replacement yet

  • Finalize a custom exterior color palette that complements the new siding and existing stucco.

Our Innovative Solutions

Sales Rep Guy White presented several siding options, but James Hardie stood out as the ideal choice for this home because:

  • Fire Resistance: James Hardie siding is non-combustible and approved for use in Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) zones, which is crucial in high fire-risk areas like Grass Valley.

  • Durability: Resistant to rot, pests, and extreme weather, Hardie siding provides decades of reliable performance.

  • Low Maintenance: Unlike wood, it will not require constant scraping or repainting.

  • Design Flexibility: The homeowner wanted to maintain the traditional board-and-batten design while introducing gable accents with Straight Edge Shingles.

  • Long-Term Value: Backed by a 30-year non-prorated warranty, James Hardie offers peace of mind and a strong return on investment.

Execution and Craftmanship

  • Siding: 73 squares of James Hardie Board and Batten, complemented by Straight Edge Shingles in the gables

  • Finish: Primed Cedarmill (custom-painted after installation)

  • Windows: Two Andersen windows upgraded for energy efficiency

  • Permits: Nevada County building permit obtained; inspections completed successfully

Project Outcome

After the siding installation, Jeff and his family began the process of choosing a color scheme. Initially, they hired a color consultant for guidance. However, Jeff shared that the consultant “did not listen to our concerns” and recommended against getting color samples for testing.

Jeff and his wife took matters into their own hands, conducting extensive testing—over 50 paint samples applied to both the new siding and the existing stucco. They studied the colors in different lighting conditions and spent months refining their choice.

Ultimately, they created a custom color palette using Benjamin Moore paints that beautifully complements the new James Hardie siding and blends with the existing elements of the home:

  • Main Body (James Hardie siding): Lousburg Green (HC-113) – a rich sage tone

  • Trim (around windows, etc.): Edgecomb Grey (HC-173)

  • Fascia Boards, Posts, Some Doors: Mink (2112-10)

  • Existing Stucco: Manchester Tan (HC-81)

"Daily we come out and look at it all in awe! You guys did a great job, and we are very happy." – Jeff W

Why Not Replace All the Windows?

Jeff opted to replace only two Andersen windows at this time. Here’s why:

"The windows are about 30 years old. Most are in good shape, and while some could use replacement, we wanted to focus on the siding first. I was a large Andersen Window dealer—Sacramento A-1 Door—before we sold in 2012, so I know the product well. I decided to wait another decade or so for the next major home makeover."

This insight highlights a strategic approach to home improvements—tackling the most urgent need first (fire-resistant siding) and planning for future upgrades in stages.

Sales Rep Perspective

"When I first met with Jeff, he told me his number one concern was protecting his home from fire. His old wood siding was a big liability in this environment. James Hardie was the clear choice—it’s non-combustible, extremely durable, and fits perfectly with the local fire-safe building requirements. Plus, he wanted to keep the board-and-batten style, so Hardie’s product line gave us that look with added performance. The Straight Edge Shingles in the gables really made the home stand out."
