5 Tips on Choosing the Right Siding for Your Home

Siding manufacturers, such as LP® SmartSide®, offer an impressive selection of siding colors and styles, which give you the flexibility to choose the siding that best fits your home. But how do you choose the siding that’s right for your home? Siding and window replacement contractor California Energy Consultant Service shares some tips.

Take Existing Exterior Colors Into Account

Unless you’re having a complete exterior makeover, your siding will need to work with existing components, such as the roof, trim and permanent components like brick or stone. Many homeowners find these components limiting. Considering the sheer amount of siding options available, however, existing components can actually help you focus your siding choices.

Check the Neighborhood Colors

You want your home to stand out among your neighbors but not stick out like a sore thumb. This is why you should still take your neighbors’ color palettes into account. Take a walk around the block, taking note of the colors your neighbors’ homes have, how the roof colors work with the siding and their color choices in terms of trim and windows. By the time you get back, you should already have an idea of what your own color palette will be.

Research Your Home Style

Homes based on traditional architectural styles would look inauthentic with the wrong siding style and color. Imagine a Craftsman-style home—which typically has earth-tone colors and handcrafted components—having a bold, modern color palette. Taking the time to research your home style’s traditional colors will help narrow down color choices as well as keep your home looking authentic.

Check the Colors During Different Times of the Day

Certain siding colors look different depending on the time of the day. Try to obtain a sample of the colors that you think are suitable for siding. Place them within visual range of the roof and other elements, then check the colors during different times of the day: morning, noon, sundown and evening. Eliminating those that do not look good at certain times can considerably pare your siding candidates down.

Use the LP SmartSide Visualizer

The LP SmartSide Visualizer lets you virtually try out any number of LP SmartSide siding products easier than trying out different pairs of shoes. Using the Visualizer is pretty simple. In addition to the sample house photos, you can upload your own for more accurate results. You can also save your designs for later reference, or when you’re ready to sit down with one of our experts for a consultation.
