California Energy Consultant Service is a combination home contractor and energy efficiency specialist. The work we do is designed to both improve the function/aesthetics of your home while also addressing energy efficiency challenges that are increasingly becoming an issue here in the Sacramento area.
Metal roofs are incredibly energy efficient, which is why metal roofing is a specialty of ours here at Cal Energy. Of the many different metal roofing styles available, one that is quite popular is made up of steel. Steel roofing is very energy efficient, as the metal reflects light outward and doesn’t absorb heat in the long term. But steel does have a tendency to heat up. To combat this, and to make steel roofing more energy efficient, some roofing uses what’s known as an “Ultra Cool” coating.
What is Ultra Cool?
Ultra cool is an additive to the coating of the steel that is designed to provide additional energy efficiency benefits. This additive can vary by manufacturer, but it contains reflective pigments that both protect the steel from overheating and reflect light back outward. Additives may include:
- Reflective Pigments – These are specialized pigments that are designed to reflect a significant portion of the sunlight that hits the coated surface. Titanium dioxide is an example of a commonly used reflective pigment known for its high reflectance properties.
- Infrared Reflective Additives – In addition to reflecting visible light, coatings may contain additives that reflect or block infrared radiation. These additives help to reduce the heat absorbed by the coated surface, contributing to improved energy efficiency.
- UV Stabilizers – Ultraviolet (UV) stabilizers are additives that help protect the coating from degradation caused by exposure to sunlight. They can enhance the durability and longevity of the coating, ensuring its continued performance over time.
Additives may also contain other properties as well. For example, they may have antifungal agents so that the steel coating doesn’t degrade over time, which would otherwise reduce its energy efficiency.
Steel Roofing and Energy Efficiency
“Ultra Cool” may be a marketing term. But the value of this type of roofing can be measured. Switching from an old, traditional roofing shingle to steel roofing with Ultra Cool coatings can help you see a dramatic improvement in your home’s energy use, ultimately helping you save money on your energy bills and reduce your carbon footprint.
