Can Replacing Your Old Windows Help You Go Green?

More and more homeowners are growing conscious of environmental conservation and would like to do all that they can to reduce their carbon footprints. A great place to start if you want to go green in your home is by replacing your old windows. In today’s post, home performance specialist, California Energy Consultant Service, explains why installing new windows can help you and your home become more environmentally friendly.

Why Newer Windows Are More Energy-Efficient

If you live in an older home, then you might have old windows that are originally installed to your residence. Even if there is nothing wrong with them aesthetically or even structurally, chances are your old windows are made up of only a single pane of glass.

Upgrading to new windows with two or more panes can significantly increase your home performance, energy-wise and help reduce utility bills. Many of today’s windows are also treated with low-E coatings that can prevent heat loss during winter and reduce the sun’s heat during summer – something that’s a challenge for all Sacramento area homeowners.

While they may be a tad bit more expensive than regular windows, low-E windows such as those by Simonton, Andersen, Milgard, and Plygem are so energy-efficient that they will pay for themselves in only a few short years. They will help keep you and your family more comfortable year-round.

If your old windows have an aluminum or steel frame, it might also be a good idea to speak to your window replacement contractor about installing frames with lower conductivity such as vinyl or fiberglass to further boost efficiency.
