Is Getting an Oversized Air Conditioner a Good Thing?

When it comes to air conditioning, there really is such a thing as having too much of a good thing. You might think that getting an oversized or overpowered air conditioner will afford you and your family more comfort, but what you’re really doing is pouring money down the drain by unnecessarily increasing your electricity bills.

Here’s what can happen when you get an oversized air conditioner for your home.

Inconsistent Cooling

An air conditioner’s job is to keep your home at a comfortable and even temperature. With an oversized unit, you may find that it cannot do this consistently. One room may be too cold while another is not cold enough. If you find that your air conditioner can’t seem to get the temperature right across different rooms, then your system could be too big.

Short Cycling

Short cycling occurs when your air conditioner’s cooling cycle is a lot shorter than usual, causing the compressor to turn on and off frequently. To find out if this is the case, time your cycle on a particularly hot day. If your system only runs for a few minutes and then shuts off, then you likely have an oversized system.

Excessive Indoor Humidity

When your air conditioner is running on short cycles, the cycle will not be long enough to remove humidity from the air. This is especially troublesome if you live in a humid environment. A properly sized air conditioner usually takes a cycle of between 20 to 30 minutes to cool and dehumidify the air.
