We don’t get much snow here in Sacramento, so we’ll leave snow off this list. But what we do get often are intense heat/sun, lots of wind, and rain that can come in bursts in winter (though less so, these days). Each can cause damage to siding in their own unique ways:

  • Wind – High winds can be particularly harsh on siding, especially if it is not properly installed or if the material is lightweight and less durable. Wind can cause physical damage like cracking, loosening, or even tearing off siding panels. In areas prone to strong winds or frequent storms, the choice of siding material and quality of installation are especially important. Most siding, when properly installed, should be able to withstand some fairly intense winds.
  • Sun – Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun can cause significant damage over time. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can lead to fading, discoloration, and the breakdown of certain materials. This is particularly true for some types of vinyl siding and painted surfaces, which may require more frequent maintenance and repainting to retain their appearance and protective properties.
  • Rain – Moisture from rain is a major concern for siding durability. Continuous exposure to rain can lead to issues like rot, mold, and mildew, especially in wood siding. In addition, heavy and persistent rain can penetrate cracks or gaps in the siding, causing structural damage to the underlying materials.

In a way, all weather is likely to lead to damage that could impact siding durability and longevity, and there is no specific element that does not pose a risk. In the long term, any of these and all of these can affect siding.

It should also be important to note that different types of siding may be impacted by different types of weather. Each element has a unique impact on siding materials, and their relative severity can depend on several factors:

  • Material Specifics – Different siding materials have varying levels of resistance to wind, sun, and rain. For instance, fiber cement and certain types of engineered wood siding offer better resistance to these elements compared to traditional wood or vinyl siding.
  • Climatic Conditions – The local climate plays a crucial role in determining which element is most damaging. In coastal areas, wind and rain might pose the greatest threat, while in desert climates, the sun’s UV rays can be more detrimental. Here in Sacramento, where we have more sun, UV rays are more likely to be a frequent risk.
  • Quality of Installation and Maintenance – Proper installation and regular maintenance can significantly mitigate the effects of these environmental factors. Poorly installed or maintained siding is more susceptible to damage from all three elements. That is why siding durability requires choosing the best siding company you can find to work with.

Of all the different issues that can affect siding, the one that tends to be the worst is rain. Rain leads to structural compromise in ways that compound upon each other. Sun can cause deterioration, but sun doesn’t itself lead to more sun damage, while rain can not only damage siding and wear it away but increase its damage as the rain progresses.

Each element poses its own set of challenges, and the best approach is to choose siding materials and installation methods that are well-suited to withstand the specific environmental conditions of your area.
