Learn More about California’s HERO Program with California Energy Consultant Service

In an effort to reduce local greenhouse gas emissions and promote energy efficient improvements in our homes, local governments, regulators, utility companies and contractors are partnering together to help make these important projects more affordable.  The Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) legislation was developed to enable special financing options for energy efficient and water saving home upgrades.

PACE legislation has made the HERO (Home Energy Renovation Opportunity) program possible. HERO provides California homeowner’s the opportunity to affordably finance energy saving upgrades to their home while also serving the greater public purpose of making our communities more sustainable.

Financing approval is based on a home’s equity and repayments are paid directly through the home’s property tax bill.  The total energy saving project can be financed which means there are no up-front costs to the homeowner.   In the event the home is sold, the remaining balance of the financing may be transferred to the new owner.  This enables homeowners to “mortgage” quality, energy saving improvements and pay only for the benefits they derive while they own the home.

There are over 50 different product categories that qualify for HERO financing.  For instance, you can finance products to create energy such as solar panels and inverters, geothermal heat pumps, and small wind turbines.  And, products to save energy like windows, skylights, doors, and roofs.  You can also qualify with products to conserve water including irrigation systems and high-efficiency faucets and toilets.  New products are being added to the qualifying list daily, so there is sure to be a home energy project to fit any home.  A comprehensive list of eligible products can be found on the HERO website at www.heroprogram.com.  If you do not find your idea listed, be sure to give them a call at 855-HERO-411 (855-437-6411) to see if your project meets HERO financing requirements.
