What Makes Windows Energy-Efficient?

Keep in mind that a lower U-value is beneficial for your windows, since it shows that it’s resistant to heat flow.

Window Frames

To complement your glazing, energy-efficient windows also feature frames with a low U-value to further reduce heat emissivity. A few examples of these energy-efficient window frames include timber, uPVC, composite aluminum, or timber. They outperform aluminum windows through superior thermal performance. These energy-efficient window frames also come with excellent weather seals that prevent air from entering or escaping your home. Keep in mind that window seals significantly improve your window’s performance. These are commonly found in modern awning, casement, and sliding windows.

Windows Energy Rating Scheme

The Windows Energy Rating Scheme, or WERS, measures the energy impact of window materials and lets you compare their performance side-by-side. They are rated on a scale of zero to ten stars – the more stars, the better their performance. If your windows are rated at least four heating or cooling stars, then this means that heat loss and heat gains are at a minimum.
