What Makes Windows Energy-Efficient?

Today’s homeowners are putting increasing emphasis on energy savings and energy efficiency. They do so by opting for energy-saving materials and options that are sustainable and helpful for the environment. However, some homeowners still have difficulties telling energy-efficient windows apart since they look the same from the exterior.

In this post, California Energy Consultant Service, the window replacement expert, shares what makes windows energy-efficient.

Low-E Glasses

Windows with Low-e glasses utilize a transparent coating to minimize the heat transfer through your glass, while allowing natural light in. This coating isn’t noticeable, and also reduces the U-value of your glass which measures how well a window prevents solar heat loss or gain. Keep in mind that a lower U-value is beneficial for your windows, since it shows that it’s resistant to heat flow.

Window Frames

To complement your glazing, energy-efficient windows also feature frames with a low U-value to further reduce heat emissivity. A few examples of these energy-efficient window frames include timber, uPVC, composite aluminum, or timber. They outperform aluminum windows through superior thermal performance. These energy-efficient window frames also come with excellent weather seals that prevent air from entering or escaping your home. Keep in mind that window seals significantly improve your window’s performance. These are commonly found in modern awning, casement, and sliding windows.

Windows Energy Rating Scheme

The Windows Energy Rating Scheme, or WERS, measures the energy impact of window materials and lets you compare their performance side-by-side. They are rated on a scale of zero to ten stars – the more stars, the better their performance. If your windows are rated at least four heating or cooling stars, then this means that heat loss and heat gains are at a minimum.
