Will Window Prices Ever Go Down?

Windows are one of the best upgrades you can make in your home. They make your home more beautiful. They provide you with better natural light. Newer windows also make your home much more energy efficient – sometimes as much as 40% more depending on how old your windows were and your insulation, among other factors.

But they can be expensive, especially if you have a home with a lot of windows – or a home with a lot of large windows. During our consultations, many people ask us the same question:

Will window prices ever go down?

Unfortunately, the answer is probably not. Or at least, not necessarily by a meaningful amount.

No one can predict the future, and windows are subject to supply and demand just like any other product. In theory, if supply ever exceeded demand (for example, if there were an economic downturn, or a glut of new window companies entering the market), it is possible for window manufacturers to price adjust downward, reducing the cost for the consumer.

But, not only is it not possible for us to predict when that may happen, but we can look at the last few years of data to note that demand has not meaningfully decreased for years. In fact, it keeps rising. Even with supply chain issues mostly fixed, windows can be as much as 1, 2, 3, even 6 months out for most orders, depending on the manufacturer. That high demand has allowed window manufacturers – many of whom create their products made-to-order – to continually raise their prices each and every year.

It’s going to take many, many years for this demand to decrease barring an unexpected economic event, and – unless more manufacturers enter the market – it is unlikely that the demand will ever reach a point low enough where window makers are willing or able to decrease their prices.

Should I Get Windows Now?

Any product you buy, no matter how large or small, might go through price fluctuations at times no matter what it is. But window prices have gone up consistently, and there is no evidence that they are going to go down any time soon. There is a much greater risk that they will continue to increase.

Never make any large financial decision based solely on a fear of missing a better price. Always make the decision that you can afford financially. But it does appear, at least at the moment, that window prices are only going to continue to increase over the next few years, and who knows what will happen afterward.

If you want windows, and you can afford windows, you should consider getting windows now. Schedule your windows today, lock in your pricing, and receive windows with Cal Energy’s window replacement service.
