Bad Indoor Air Quality Habits to Break in 2022

There are proven, practical ways to maintain your home’s air quality. This way, you can ensure you are comfortable and healthy while at home. To help you understand the things you should and should not do, here’s a guide you can follow made by your local HVAC and window contractor

  1. Burning candles. This is one of the most overlooked situations that you should remember. Candles contain a petroleum derivative called paraffin, which emits high VOCs or volatile organic compounds as it burns. Although paraffin is also found in heating oil — the key difference is that furnaces have exhaust vents; candles do not. If you need to use candles, you are urged to trim the wick to a quarter-inch length. Moreover, you can avoid using candles made from petroleum derivatives.

  2. Failing to address leaks. Cracks and gaps in your home prompt warm air to escape. This leads to your heating and cooling bills rising. Hence, to avoid discomfort and higher utility bills, address leaks in your plumbing, electrical, and roofing system. This way, you can also be assured that you’re safe from microorganisms that may harm your health.

  3. Neglecting dirty and outdated air filters. Residential window replacement and HVAC installers say the easiest way to ensure your HVAC system functions efficiently is to replace air filters regularly. Dirt and debris can accumulate in these filters over time. So, make it a habit to have your systems checked, maintained and cleaned. It allows you to save from all the repair and replacement expenses also.

  4. Using harsh cleaning products. VOCs are particles released into the air through a process called off-gassing. These can be found in products like antibacterial cleaning sprays, bleach, and similar products. Avoid utilizing harmful substances and use natural household cleaners like vinegar, baking soda and dish soap instead.
