How New Siding Can Improve Indoor Air Quality in California

We talk a lot about the benefits of new siding – particularly, energy efficient siding. Many of us forget about our siding until it becomes damaged. But replacing that siding with a better insulated siding material can save you money on energy bills, improve the look of your home, help keep you property more comfortable, and much more.

One rarely mentioned benefit of new siding that is especially relevant in the Sacramento area is the way that siding can improve indoor air quality. Though it may not be the primary reason you replace your siding, there are very tangible benefits to indoor air quality that you will experience if you replace old siding with a new energy efficient option.

Benefits of New Siding on Air Quality

The following are some of ways that siding can have an effect on indoor air quality, and some of the reasons that people may want to consider upgrading their siding sooner, rather than later.

Air Leaks and California Fires

Older siding is more likely to have air leaks. Air leaks affect energy efficiency and comfort, which is the main reason people repair and replace them. But places like Sacramento, Roseville, El Dorado Hills, Cameron Park, Orangevale, and those anywhere near the forests are also at risk for smoke during fire season. If there are air leaks, that smoke can get inside of your property.

Siding installation solves any issues with air leaks, thus blocking smoke from entering your property. You may still be at risk if you have leaky windows, but this is one more way that siding can protect your property from smoke, and in turn help to improve indoor air quality.

Preventing Moisture Buildup

Old siding has a tendency to allow for moisture buildup and weather leaks. Moisture buildup leads to issues like mold and mildew. In moderate to severe cases, this mold and mildew will eventually enter the property and potentially lead to issues that affect indoor air quality. Replacing your siding addresses these issues early, and should reduce the risk of indoor mold spores.

Less AC and Furnace Use

Newer HVAC systems that have been well maintained can actually improve the air quality, not hurt it, as the fan has a filter that takes away some of the particles in the air.

But many people have older systems that are not well maintained, and may not even receive their necessary regular maintenance. In those cases, running the AC or furnace will distribute dust and pathogens around the property.

New siding with better energy efficiency will mean that you won’t have to run your AC and heating system that often, which in turn means less distribution of dust and particles. Cleaning and maintaining your AC will be more effective, but the benefit is still there.

Is it Time to Replace Your Siding?

Interior air quality is certainly not the primary reasons that homeowners will replace their siding. But it is a very real benefit, and one that only adds to the long list of reasons that people with old siding should consider siding installation.
